In Sanskrit language, Bhastrika means bellows. Bhastrika pranayama is all about inhaling and exhaling completely. In bhastrika breathing exercise, inhaling and exhaling deeply resembles the blowing of bellows, which makes a hissing sound. In this pranayama, our body gets maximum oxygen due to deep inhaling.
Regular practice of bhastrika pranayama boosts our immune system and keeps us away from any disease. Those who are suffering from heart problems or a migraine should practice bhastrika pranayama regularly.
Steps for Bhastrika Pranayama
- Sit comfortably on the ground or on a chair. Take a deep breath through both nostrils till the lungs are full with air and then breathe out completely through both the nostrils.
- Keep in mind that inhaling and exhaling completely should be done with great force making a hissing sound. Inhalation should be of 2½ seconds and exhalation of 2½ seconds. Means 12 times in one minute.
- Continue breathing like this for 2 – 5 minutes. After practice, you can increase the duration.

Precautions for Bhastrika Pranayama
- Heart patient and high blood pressure patient should practice slowly and under expert guidance.
- Always practice on an empty stomach.
- In summer days do not overdo practice of bhastrika.
- When you inhale or breathe in, the air should fill in the chest area but not in the stomach.
